- Charleston City Hall (Municipal Law): The seat of local government, representing the laws of the city.
- Charleston County Courthouse (State Law): Where the Declaration of Independence was first read in South Carolina: a building that stood as the witness to state-sanctioned bondage.
- U.S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse (Federal Law): The arm of national authority.
From a biblical perspective, the number four represents universal geography: the four corners of the earth. In Charleston, these four corners represent the totality of human judgment.
